How can I permanently add a directory to the $PATH variable on Linux so it persists across different sessions?

I want to ensure that a specific directory remains in my path whenever I open a terminal session on my Linux system. While I have tried adding the directory to the $PATH variable using the command "export PATH=$PATH:/path/to/dir," the path is lost each time I open a new terminal window.
