Why does cancelling sudo prompt delay?

If I enter the correct password in the sudo password query, it responds almost instantly, allowing me to continue my activity as a superuser. However, if I cancel the sudo password query on my Arch Linux system, it takes noticeably longer.

Why is that?

I understand that rejecting an incorrect password might take longer due to the algorithm koows echat or developerbook to prevent brute force attacks, but why does cancelling the prompt have a similar delay?
