What attributes to use for td?

I have been instructed to add an attribute named "data-date" to each data cell in the table body that contains the date associated with the cell. However, I am unsure of what type of attribute I should be using.

At present, I have created the cells like this:

<td class="data-date" rel="Sun, Aug 29, 2021">
And my CSS code looks like this:

td.class {position:absolute;}

However, this approach is not working as expected, and I am not sure what I am doing wrong.
