The station boasts a robust news and sports department, and it's also got a number of other programs that make it worth a listen. One of the most popular is "Heute im Stadion", a sport related talk show that reports on soccer and football matches from noon until 6 pm. Another popular program is "Blaue Couch", a celebrity talk show that airs on Sundays.
As the name suggests, it is an oldie but goodie. It is, after all, one of the oldest stations in Germany, and its history goes back to the first Bayerischer Rundfunk radio programme, which was aired in the early 1940s. From the early days, BAYERN 1 was a music centric station, with a focus on folk, schlager, and rock, and a heavy sprinkling of novelty songs, operetta tunes, and novelty hits from the '80s and '90s.
BAYERN 1 is the flagship of the Bavarian Radio Group, the largest radio company in Germany, and the first station of its kind. Apart from its own station, it is also available on 39 other frequencies across Bavaria. For example, the station is available on DAB+ in the Upper Bavarian regions and in the South Tyrol area, allowing it to reach the entire Bavarian state.
