Whenever people today see wonders of the ancient world, like Stonehenge or the Pyramids, the question that always comes up is "how'd they do that? These are the questions that this documentary series tries to answer, and one thing is clear — it wasn't easy!
1. Viking Voyage
How difficult would it be sailing across the North Sea in a massive wooden boat with only a primitive sun-compass for navigation? The Vikings managed it, so in Secrets of the Ancients, an international crew decided to give it a go in a replica Viking long boat. Kind of makes our everyday reliance on the A to Z rather pathetic.
2. Caesar´s Bridge
Julius Caesar claimed that during the Gallic wars, he had built a sturdy wooden bridge across the Rhine, over which he marched an entire army, in just ten days. A couple of thousand years later, this series looks on as engineer Chris Wise uses Caesar's own recorded account in an attempt to recreate this engineering feat over the North Tyne.
3. The Claw
The mathematician Archimedes invented a terrifying machine known as The Claw, which was used successfully against the Romans when they attempted to conquer Syracuse. Despite the slight inconvenience that there is no record of the machine's appearance or its mechanism, engineer Jo da Silva attempts to recreate it for Secrets.
4. Olmec Heads
The Olmec civilization in Mexico sculpted massive stone heads 3000 years ago — 500 years before Rome was founded. These statues weighed up to 40 tonnes and were made from stone that came from the Tuxtla mountains more than 160 kilometres away. The journey would have taken the Olmecs across great rivers and virtually impassable swamps. How did they manage that?
5. Hanging Gardens of Babylon
A lot of people have heard of The Hanging Gardens of Babylon, but few know why these gardens were considered by the Greeks to be one of the Seven Wonders of the World. The irrigation system alone is a mystery worthy of its own Secrets episode. How were such elaborate gardens watered? No one really knows, but attempts to test various theories have been made by modern water engineers using technology of the time and this series follows those attempts. At least these Babylonians didn't have to face the modern-day difficulty of a hose-pipe ban.

Blood Of The Vikings

Julian Richards investigates Viking Britain, from the first raids to their settlement of the British Isles and traces their legacy through a genetics survey. Journey back to 793 on the coast of Holy Island, home to the peaceful monks of Lindisfarne who were brutally murdered by raiders from the sea. The Norwegian countryside reveals Viking graves, littered with treasures that once belonged to the monks! In Oseburg, Norway, uncover an entire Viking ship, preserved in a massive Pagan burial ground. On board, discover the bowels of the vessel bursting with treasure that archaeological evidence connects to a Scottish monastery, burned and pillaged hundreds of years before.
On the salty bluffs of northern Scotland, where the ancient Pictish people lived, explore a still-popular debate. Historians argue that the Vikings maintained peaceful relations with the Picts, trading with them freely. Now, hear others contend that the Vikings wiped these pre-Scotsmen off the map! Whichever the case, one thing seems certain: the Vikings took every available opportunity and life to make money.
The Survey
The UCL genetics survey set out to discover if any genetic traces of the Vikings remained in the British Isles - and what this might reveal about the Viking Age. We hoped to find out where Vikings settled and roughly how significant those settlements were. DNA samples were taken from men at a number of sites. In the main, small towns were chosen and the men tested were required to be able to trace their male line back two generations in the same rural area - within 20 miles of the town chosen. The aim was to reduce the effects of later population movements, assuming that in between the Norman invasion of 1066 and the 20th century movement would have been limited.
The tests looked at the Y chromosome, which is only carried by men. This chromosome is particularly useful for population genetics studies as it is passed directly from father to son with virtually no alteration. Other chromosomes exist in pairs, one member of which is passed on from the mother and the other from the father. But because women do not carry a Y chromosome, geneticists can always be sure that this part of a man's DNA has come from his father, and from his grandfather before him. This chromosome allows geneticists to begin to unravel the male ancestry of the British Isles.
1. First Blood
Loot found secreted in pagan graves in Norway provides some major clues that point to Viking perpetrators following the discovery of murder victims in Wales and a monastery razed to the ground in Scotland.
2. Invasion
In AD 856, a massive fleet of Viking ships appeared off the coast of East Anglia, heralding a change in Viking tactics - from raiding to invasion. Richards charts the years of attempted conquest that followed.
3. The Sea Road
Julian Richards investigates the impact of the Vikings in Britain. This edition focuses on the archaeological trail left by the Vikings as they travelled from Norway along the sea road to Dublin. Settlements, a boat burial and evidence of trading have been discovered on the Scottish isles, and silver hoards found in Ireland suggest that Dublin was not only wealthy and important, but also a centre for trade in slaves.
4. Rulers
Julian Richards recalls how, after years of raiding, England's resistance was so weakened that, in the early 11th century, the Vikings were finally able to seize the throne. In other parts of the British Isles however, they gained and maintained power by integration.
5. Last of the Vikings
In the last of the series, Julian Richards uncovers new information from the battle in 1066 between Viking warlord Harald Hardrada and King Harold of England that marked the end of the Viking age in Britain. Results from a nationwide genetic survey show where in Britain the Vikings left a measurable contribution.

1 Who Killed Jesus?
No trial or execution in history has had such a momentous outcome as that of Jesus in Roman occupied Jerusalem, 2000 years ago.
But was it an execution or a judicial murder; and who was responsible?
The Bible Mysteries programme focused on three suspects, Caiaphas, the Jewish High Priest; Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor; and, most surprisingly of all, Jesus himself.
2 Joshua and the Battle of Jericho
Joshua and the walls of Jericho is one of the most violent stories of the Bible. An army of nomads emerges from the desert and destroys a heavily fortified city... not by force, but by faith. 3 Joseph and His Multi-coloured Coat
The story of Joseph is one of the best known tales in the Bible. The events of Joseph's life are also found in the Torah and the Qur'an. Today it is perhaps most associated with the West End and Sunday school. Written down by scribes about 1000 years after the events supposedly took place, it is often thought that the story may have some historical tradition, but with a healthy portion of dramatic license. Egyptologists, however, have uncovered some intriguing evidence.
4 The Real Mary Magdalene
Mary Magdalene's story is intimately linked with Jesus. She plays a starring role in one of the most powerful and important scenes in the Gospels.
When Jesus is crucified by the Romans, Mary Magdalene was there supporting him in his final terrifying moments and mourning his death. She also discovers the empty tomb, and she's a witness to the resurrection. She was there at the beginning of a movement that was going to transform the West. But the Mary Magdalene that lives in our memories is quite different. In art, she's often semi-naked, or an isolated hermit repenting for her sins in the wilderness: an outcast.
5 David and Goliath
The legendary battle between the over-grown Philistine warrior Goliath and the humble shepherd boy David is an archetype which has resonance well beyond the Old Testament account. Whenever a lower division football club thwarts a premier squad in a giant-slaying encounter it is celebrated as a 'David and Goliath' event. The defiant courage of the underdog appeals to our deep-seated emotional need to witness the powerless turning the tables, for once, on the powerful.
6 Herod and the Bethlehem Massacre
The Romans appointed King Herod as King of Judea in 37 BC. Historians agree that, in many respects Herod had a hugely successful reign. King Herod an ethnically Arab but practicing Jew increased the land he governed from Palestine to parts of modern Jordan, Lebanon and Syria constructing fortresses, aqueducts and amphitheatres and earned him the title 'Herodes Magnus', Herod the Great.
7 The Disciples
Nobody knows for sure just how long Jesus’ ministry, teaching and travelling throughout Israel, lasted. Some say three years others as little as one. That Christianity grew, after such a brief inception, into the world religion we know to today is testimony to the power of the message Jesus preached. But it is also due to a much simpler and often over-looked fact. He had more than a little help from his friends.
8 The Revelation: The End of the World?
The Book of Revelation, the last book of the Bible, has fascinated and puzzled Christians for centuries. With its vivid imagery of disaster and suffering - the Battle of Armageddon, the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, the hideous Beast whose number is 666 - many have seen it as a map to the end of the world. Some say it predicts global warming, AIDS and even the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. But Biblical scholars, having studied the text and the social and political history of the time, have a different interpretation.
9 Peter the Rock
Peter is remembered by Christians as a saint; the fisherman who became the right-hand-man of Jesus himself, the leader of the early church and a Father of the faith. But how much of his fascinating story is true? How much do we know about the real Peter?
